Despite 20-degree temperatures, UMaine Backcountry Squatters are enjoying nature

On Saturday, UMaine’s Backcountry Squatters took a trip to the Bangor City Forest to enjoy nature and walk with friends.

The day started with an icebreaker: names, pronouns and something positive from the previous week. Positives ranged from tests that went well to fun concerts. The group cheered after each introduction. This spirit continued, even in the toe-numbing cold. Giggling and chatter could be heard throughout the walk.

“You don’t want to do these things alone and it’s great to have a bunch of friends to do it with. And this is a great club to meet people,” said Madeleine Cormier, the president of Backcountry Squatters.

“I have never been to the Bangor Forest so this was kind of new for me. I was not expecting it to be that absolutely beautiful,” said Backcountry Squatters treasurer, Rachel Harrington.

This was one of many Backcountry Squatters trips this school year. Last fall, they took a 10-mile, overnight hike through the Bigelow range. Last month, they jumped at the Orono Trampoline Park. The wide range of activities aims to be inclusive of all comfort levels in the outdoors. Any specialized gear needed for these adventures is included in the $10 dues.

“We’re a club that aims to get women and gender minorities into the outdoors and create a community here on campus,” said Cormier.

The UMaine club is a chapter of the national Backcountry Squatters. This nonprofit was created as an alternative to the many male-dominated outdoor groups across the country.

“Backcountry squatters are so special. I think what really makes it for me is the inclusivity of it all and the support that comes with it,” said Harrington.
